Bleeding Time (BT) Definition of Bleeding Time (BT) ____________________________________ Bleeding time is a clinical laboratory test performed to evaluate platelet function. It involves the creation of a standardized incision and timing the cessation of bleeding. The historical indications were the pre-operative assessment of patients taking aspirin or NSAIDs and screening for von-Willebrand disease. ~Sample... _________________ After cleansing with alcohol, a standardized device is utilized to make a 10mm long and 1mm deep incision on the volar forearm. Using a timer the blood is blotted twice a minute. The time stops when there is no further bleeding after blotting. Bleeding time is a laboratory test to assess platelet function and the body's ability to form a clot. The test involves making a puncture wound in a superficial area of the skin and monitoring the time needed for bleeding to stop (ie, bleeding site turns "glassy"). Indication for `Bleeding time' (BT) _______________-----------_____________ General interpretations of bleeding time are as follows: 1-9 minutes: Normal. 9-15 minutes: Platelet dysfunction. More than 15 minutes: Critical; test must be discontinued and pressure should be applied. Advantage of Bleeding time (BT) ____________------------_______________ The measurement of bleeding time is mostly of historical value in the screening of qualitative platelet abnormalities. It was used to screen for bleeding disorders and quantify platelet function in patients taking aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications. Disadvantage of Bleeding time (BT) ____________________________________ Normal bleeding time (BT) does not rule out significant abnormalities of the platelets in case of clinical suspicions. In such cases, a platelets aggregation test should be performed, and check the fibrinogen level.
