Here are some key concepts about food chains: Trophic levels Organisms in a food chain are organized into trophic levels, or positions, based on what they eat. Producers At the base of the food chain are producers, which are organisms that make their own food using photosynthesis or chemosynthesis. Consumers Organisms that eat other organisms are called consumers. Primary consumers are herbivores that eat producers, secondary consumers are carnivores that eat primary consumers, and so on. Decomposers Decomposers, like bacteria, are often the final link in a food chain. They break down the tissues of dead plants and animals, adding nutrients to the soil for new plants to grow. Energy transfer Energy is lost at each trophic level, so food chains are usually no more than four or five levels long. This is because about 50% of energy is lost as heat when an organism is eaten. Food webs Most organisms eat more than one type of plant or animal, so their food chains overlap and connect to form food webs.
