Papa Don Vappie's New Orleans Jazz Band - "Please Come Home For Christmas"
Featured on the Putumayo collection "New Orleans Christmas." Originally released on October 3rd, 2006. From the liner notes: DonVappie is not as old as his nickname suggests. He’s part of a new generation of Southern Louisiana musicians who have dedicated themselves to carrying on the old-time traditions of their predecessors. As a young musician,Vappie learned his craft by playing bass in rhythm-and-blues bands. Later, he developed into a traditional jazz banjo player and has since become a very accomplished bandleader, arranger, and vocalist. “Please Come Home for Christmas” was written by singer and pianist Charles Brown, whose other holiday classic,“Merry Christmas, Baby,” was a hit nearly fifteen years earlier.“Please Come Home for Christmas” was a bluesy chart-topper during the Christmas holidays in 1961, and has since been recorded by James Brown,The Eagles, and Jon Bon Jovi, among many others. Here, Papa DonVappie lifts the tune out of its original rhythm-and-blues setting, giving it a traditional jazz arrangement that still retains noticeable touches of R&B in the driving piano accompaniment and soulful saxophone solo.
