Various of revellers toasting the new year STORYLINE: People across Spain welcomed the new year by observing a tradition involving 12 grapes. As the clocks strike midnight, revellers eat 12 grapes - one for each chime. It’s a tradition that dates back to the turn of the 20th century. Back then, an abundant harvest led grape growers to come up with a novel way to get rid of their product surplus. The New Year's countdown is traditionally broadcast live from Madrid’s iconic Puerta del Sol Square. The clock on top of the Post Office building there indicates when it's time to toast to the New Year.
