Presider: Fr. James Kubicki S.J. Parish: St. Francis de Sales Seminary Choir: Heart of the Nation TEXT FROM THE GOSPEL AND HOMILY The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A reading from the holy gospel according to Mark. Glory to you, o Lord. As Jesus was setting out on a journey a man ran up, knelt down before him, and asked him, "Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus answered him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: you shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; you shall not defraud; honor your father and your mother." He replied and said to him, "Teacher all of these I have observed from my youth." Jesus looking at him loved him and said to him, "You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me." At that statement his face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions. Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, "How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!" The disciples were amazed at his words. So, Jesus again said to them in reply, "Children how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God." They were exceedingly astonished and said among themselves, "Then who can be saved?" Jesus looked at them and said, "For human beings it is impossible but not for God. All things are possible for God." The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus in our gospel is teaching about wealth and in a way what its purpose is. And the apostles were as we heard, exceedingly astonished. They were amazed at Jesus' teaching. Why? Why were they so amazed and astonished? Well at the time of Jesus, to have wealth was a sign that God loved you. God was blessing you. If you were poor, well I'm sorry, God did not love you. And either you were being punished for your sins or you were being punished for your ancestors' sins. And Jesus turns that around. In fact, in the beatitudes he says, "Blessed are the poor." And in Luke's gospel he tells us parables about someone who had a lot of wealth and a great harvest and thought to himself “I'll build bigger barns.” He was going to hold onto his wealth for himself when there were people struggling to eat so Jesus is not preaching so much against wealth because he himself depended upon others to provide for his needs as he and his disciples journeyed. He's preaching against those who hold onto their wealth and find their security in it. And think that they will always have it. But as we know, true wisdom is about knowing our goal and purpose in life and knowing that this life is not the only life. And so our responsorial psalm says that we need to number our days aright. That we might have wisdom. To realize I don't have forever to live the life that God has called me to and to use the things that I've been given, my talents, my gifts for others because as the saying goes you cannot take it with you, can you? I mean have you ever seen a luggage rack or a U-Haul trailer behind a hearse? Clearly the goods of this earth are here for us to use. And it's been said that we use them well when we help one another. It's been said that the only thing that lasts and the only thing we can take with us at the end of our lives is the love that has inspired us to share with one another.
