Thomas’ immediate response was that he did not know where Jesus was going. He did not know the way and so how could he follow the Lord. Thus, the gospel today places before us one of the fundamental questions in our Christian living. It is a normal human quest to know oneself. Where have I come from and where am I going? What is there after this life? Knowing clearly ‘where we are going’ fills us with meaning and purpose. Disciples were following ‘where ever’ Jesus went. Where Jesus was going was their way. Now Jesus is going to the Father. The way now is not a walking path, but Jesus himself. What is the meaning of Jesus being the way? Their ministry, preaching, healing, and their very persons are directed and re-formed by the person of Jesus. Whatever they do or say is the way to the Father through Jesus. Augustine says that when our Lord said “I am the way, and the truth, and the life,” he was saying in effect: How do you want to go? I am the way. Where do you want to go? I am the truth. Where do you want to remain? I am the life.” As St. Hilary says, “he who is the way does not lead us off the right path; he who is the truth does not deceive us with falsehoods, and he who is the life does not abandon us to death. Dear friends, knowledge of the way depends on clear knowledge of where we are going. For us, Christ is the way and our destination. He is the way by reason of his human nature, and the destination because of his divinity. Therefore, as a human, he says, “I am the way,” as God, he adds, “I am the truth and the life.” Let us ask the grace to know God, and in him ourselves Amen. #dominicanmediamission #DOMINICANFRIARSINDIA
