Conspiracies regarding Abraham Lincoln’s assassination started very shortly after he was killed. Tensions were very high in the United States, with the Civil War recently ending, many people believed that the South, specifically Confederate leaders like Jefferson Davis were responsible for Lincoln’s assassinations. Conspiracies went far beyond the South though. Many people and institutions were blamed for the death of Lincoln. Some believed that religious institutions were involved. Others blamed Vice President Andrew Johnson, and others even thought that other Republicans, specifically the Radical Republicans, conspired to have him killed. To this day there are still many different beliefs about who was really to blame for Abraham Lincoln’s death.
