Easter Sunday Easter Expectations - Rev. Dr. Andrew McDonald Worship/Music Notes Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed! Welcome to Easter Sunday at Kirk in the Hills—we are delighted that you are with us as we celebrate Christ’s triumph over sin and death. Let us rejoice and sing with our hearts and minds. Let us worship God—Alleluia! At the conclusion of the 9:00 am and 11:00 am services we hear a full peal (random ringing) of five of the carillon’s lowest bells; one of only two times during the church year when this is done at the Kirk, the other time being Christmas Eve at midnight. Dr. Gwyneth Walker (b. 1947) is a graduate of Brown University and the HarE School of Music. She holds B.A., M.M. and D.M.A. degrees in Music Composition. A former faculty member of the Oberlin College Conservatory, she resigned from academic employment in 1982 to pursue a career as a full-time composer. For nearly 30 years, she lived on a dairy farm in Braintree, Vermont before returning to live in her childhood hometown of New Canaan, Connecticut. Charles-Marie-Jean-Albert Widor (1844–1937) was a French organist, composer and teacher most remembered for his ten organ symphonies, especially for the toccata we hear today—the last movement of his fifth organ symphony. Widor was the longest-serving organist of Saint-Sulpice in Paris, a role he held for 63 years (1870–1933). He also was organ professor at the Paris Conservatory from 1890 to 1896 (following César Franck) as well as professor of composition at the same institution. Widor was a prolific composer, writing music for organ, piano, voice and ensembles. 11:00 am Musicians: David Ammer, Derek Lockhart, trumpets; ScoE Strong, horn; Brian Johnston, trombone; David Zerkel, tuba; Colin McCall, timpani; Zoe Lei, organist; Marilyn Biery, organist and director.
