What 100-Year-Old Kitchens Got Right

What did kitchens get right 100 years ago… that we’ve quietly moved away from? In this video, I’m exploring the concept of the unfitted kitchen — how kitchens worked before built-in cabinets became standard, and why this older approach might actually be more practical today. As we’ve been planning (very slowly!) for our future move to France, I’ve found myself looking at kitchens in a completely different way. Over and over again, I see beautiful historic homes… with ultra-modern, fitted kitchens that feel completely disconnected from the character of the house. And it’s made me wonder...were older kitchens actually more functional than we think? In this video, I’m exploring the idea of the unfitted kitchen - what it is, how kitchens used to work before built-in cabinetry became the norm, and why I’m seriously considering this approach for our future home. From my own Hoosier cabinet to European kitchen traditions, to the idea of building a kitchen piece by piece over time, this is a mix of history, practicality, and a little bit of dreaming about what’s possible. If you’ve ever felt like modern kitchens all look the same… or wondered if there’s another way to design a space that actually works for how you live, I think you’ll enjoy this. --- In this video: What an unfitted kitchen actually is How kitchens worked before built-in cabinets The history of the Hoosier cabinet European kitchen traditions (and why some people take their kitchens with them!) The balance of function and beauty How to create a more intentional, practical kitchen space My dream kitchen ideas for a future home in France --- Let’s chat: If you were designing your own kitchen, would you go fully modern… or would you consider something more unfitted and flexible?
