Live updates on NSW flooding: Lismore dam overflows, main street in Byron Bay flooded
The flood-ravaged town of Lismore has been evacuated and the main street of Byron Bay has been flooded after heavy rains in northern NSW. #NSWfloods #LIVEupdates #Lismore Lismore MP Janelle Saffin said residents were puzzled by the SES' decision to lift the Lismore CBD evacuation order overnight and then reinstate it, saying the call was made by "the highest level of SES" and not the result of a local assessment. Ms Safin said there was a clear "disagreement" between the SES and the Bureau of Meteorology on the issue of warnings. "This problem has been around for a while and we've been assured it's been fixed. It's not. We want more local knowledge," she told 2GB Radio. Ms Safin also revealed that seven powerful ADF vehicles capable of traversing the floodwaters were not used in the flood-ravaged area around Lismore because ADF officials "don't know the road". Ms Safin said SES operated a "very busy" heavy vehicle but wondered why ADF vehicles had been sitting idle. "I think it would be nice if the locals went with them," she said. Ms Saffin also expressed her concerns about Lismore's flood siren, which failed this morning when the levee was buried. "The problems I mentioned before are not new," she said.
