Season 5 Episode 10 Psalm 46: Finding Peace in the Midst of Chaos

Introduction Welcome to ‘2 Minutes with the Lord. I am your host Fr. Dominic Veigas SVD Have you ever felt like the world around you was spinning out of control? Maybe it was a crisis, unexpected news, or just the constant demands of daily life. Psalm 46 meets us in these moments, offering a powerful reminder: God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Today, let’s reflect on what it means to find peace, even when life feels chaotic. Psalm Reading “Let’s listen to the opening verses of Psalm 46, hearing them as words of comfort and truth.” ‘God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.’ “Psalm 46 opens with one of the most comforting declarations in Scripture: ‘God is our refuge and strength.’ A refuge is a place of safety, a shelter from the storm. But this Psalm goes further—it reminds us that God is not just a distant, safe place; He is actively present, providing strength when we feel weak. The imagery in this Psalm is dramatic: the earth giving way, mountains falling into the sea, waters roaring and foaming. It paints a picture of complete chaos yet boldly declares, ‘We will not fear.’ Why? Because God’s presence is more significant than any storm. Notice the phrase ‘ever-present help in trouble.’ It doesn’t say God is only present when life is calm, or we’ve figured everything out. He is with us in the middle of the mess, the noise, and the uncertainty. This isn’t just a promise for ancient Israel but for you today, no matter what you’re facing. This Psalm may have been inspired by a deliverance event, such as God protecting Jerusalem during Sennacherib’s invasion (2 Kings 19:32–36). Where in your life do you need to experience God as your refuge? What storm are you in right now, and how might it change your perspective to know that God is standing with you?” Psalm 46 was likely written during a tremendous national turmoil for Israel—perhaps during a siege or invasion. For the people of Israel, Jerusalem symbolized God’s presence, particularly the temple, often called ‘God’s dwelling place.’ In verse 4, the Psalm speaks of a river that brings joy to the city of God. While Jerusalem doesn’t have a literal river, this imagery reflects the spiritual sustenance from God’s presence. This Psalm also inspired Martin Luther’s famous hymn, ‘A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.’ During the Reformation, Luther turned to this Psalm for strength and courage in the face of immense opposition. It reminds us that throughout history, God’s people have leaned on Him as their unshakable refuge.” Whenever you feel overwhelmed or anxious this week, pause and repeat these words: ‘God is my refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.’ Let them remind you that no matter what shakes your world, God is your steady, immovable foundation.” Let’s pray. Lord, thank You for being our refuge in the storms of life. When chaos surrounds us, and fear tries to take hold, remind us that You are near, giving us strength and peace. Help us to trust in Your unshakable presence, knowing that You are always with us, even in the most challenging moments. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen. Thank you for joining me today. Psalm 46 reminds us that no matter how chaotic life feels, God is our refuge and strength, always present, always faithful. This week, lean into that truth and let it bring you peace. Join me next time as we continue our journey through the Psalms, and until then, trust in His presence and rest in His strength.”
