Following John Marston's departure from Pronghorn Ranch, he heads into the town of Blackwater to see if he can acquire a loan to purchase Beecher's Hope, a small run-down ranch that had attracted Abigail's interest. Under the advice of David Geddes, John goes to see Ansel Atherton, a banker at the Co-Op and distant cousin of Geddes. With Geddes' recommendation, John not only acquires a loan for Beecher's Hope, but also a line of credit that John can use to purchase timber and equipment to rebuild the ranch.
