In 1972 T. Rex and Slade helped define the glam rock sound that would dominate the decade. Don McLean, Nilsson and Rod Stewart’s showcased the growing popularity of singer-songwriters. Novelty hits like My Ding-a-Ling by Chuck Berry and Mouldy Old Dough by Lieutenant Pigeon were examples of humorous, quirky songs that climbed to the top. Teen Idols Dominate with Donny Osmond and David Cassidy reflecting the popularity of teen heartthrobs. In 1972, the best-selling single of the year was Amazing Grace by The Pipes and Drums and the Military Band of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards.
