The Holy Eucharist: Rite II on The Second Sunday after the Epiphany, January 19, 2025 at 11 a.m. at Calvary Episcopal Church, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Rev. Jonathon W. Jensen, Rector, was the preacher. Assisting: the Rev. Cameron J. Soulis, Senior Associate Rector, The Rev. Bonnie-Marie Yager-Wiggan, Associate Rector, the Rev. Deanna J. Briody, Curate, the Rev. Geoffrey S. Royce, Deacon, Alan Lewis, Director of Music, Jon Tyillian, Assistant Organist. Musical Notes: Sometimes called the “Queen of Chorales,” the hymn How bright appears the Morning Star was first published in 1599. (Its companion, the “King of Chorales,” is the Advent hymn “Sleepers, wake! ”) Both these texts and their melodies are attributed to the pastor Philip Nicolai, and are included in a volume of poetry prompted by a devastating outbreak of plague in the Westphalian community in which he was serving. The setting by Dieterich Buxtehude (1637-1707) presents the entire tune twice through, the music broken up into short sections, each devoted to one phrase of the melody at a time, and the sections differentiated by texture, figuration, and where in the texture the long notes of the melody appear.
