Pubic Lice Infestation (Pubic Crabs): Symptoms, Causes, Treatment, Complications & Prevention Pubic lice, or crabs, scientifically known as Pthirus pubis, are small parasitic insects that infest coarse human hair, especially in the genital area, but can also be found in armpits, chest, and eyelashes. Symptoms include intense itching, especially at night, visible lice or eggs, blue spots or sores from bites, red itchy bumps, and black specks of louse feces. The primary cause is direct transfer through sexual contact, but sharing clothing or bedding and close personal contact can also spread them. Diagnosis involves medical history, visual inspection, and sometimes microscopic examination. Treatment typically includes over-the-counter lotions or shampoos containing permethrin or pyrethrins, prescription medications for resistant cases, and decontamination of clothing and bedding. Complications can include secondary bacterial infections, eye infections, and psychological distress.
