Thanksgiving and Kidney Disease: 4 Tips to Protect Kidneys Against Damage From Thanksgiving Foods

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us here at HealthyKidney Inc! Thanksgiving and kidney disease is a trending topic right now, and we want to let you know how you can protect your vulnerable kidneys from damages from a lot of foods that you probably otherwise wouldn't be eating. The Thanksgiving meal definitely includes some foods that we would otherwise look to avoid when dealing with kidney disease such as foods with high sodium, protein and fats. Foods like potatoes which will surely be on the table are high in potassium, so just be aware. As we know, the general dietary recommendations for people with kidney disease are low-salt, low-potassium, low-phosphorus, low-protein, low-fat, high vitamin, and high fiber which does not exactly line up with a Thanksgiving meal. Here are some tips on how to protect those kidneys. Starting with the day before, take some phosphorus binders and sodium bicarbonate. We have a lot of videos of the benefits of sodium bicarbonate. This will help reduce acid buildup from a lot of these foods you will be ingesting. Also, take some vitamin C and Vitamin. Take one pill of each--day before, day of, day after--this will blunt the effects of high fat foods and protect against cell damage. Do not be concerned with the sodium in sodium bicarbonate as it is a very small amount. Lastly drink plenty of water throughout the time around and after Thanksgiving to facilitate urination and help remove waste. More tips include taking CoQ10, and other antioxidants. Also, look to add plenty of kidney friendly fruits and vegetables to your plate. After the holiday, be sure to return to your proper diet that helps your kidneys. Talk to your doctor to ensure that you are able to momentarily ease up on your diet restrictions for Thanksgiving. Again, happy Thanksgiving everybody, and stay safe!
