Some viewers have inquired as to what Mike's original four-day split routine was when he was training for competition during the late 1970s. So, after some digging through the files, here is Mike in his own words describing how he used to train when he was in competition from 1977-1980. Prior to 1977, he trained his full body three times per week (approximately two to five sets per muscle group). This video is presented for historical purposes, as Mike would later claim that "despite being the arch-advocate of lesser training [back when he competed], I was still overtraining." When he began training personal clients, the majority of which were natural and not genetically blessed, he quickly discovered that two to three workouts per week and anything over two sets per muscle group led to overtraining for these people almost immediately. Consequently, he further examined and refined the theory of high-intensity training to the version he presented in the mid to late 90s (the specifics of which are available in other videos on this channel). I’ve used some noise filters on the audio as there was a terrible buzz coming through the phone line when I interviewed him for this. I was able to remove most of it, but the audio is far from studio quality.
