Legend MADE UP This Song in the MIDDLE of Recording HIs VOCAL…Became a Classic! | Professor of Rock

Coming up… separate interviews with 2 legends behind one of the most truthful and compelling songs of the rock era: The Heart of the Matter by Don Henley written for his solo album The End of the Innocence. It's a song that’s changed so many people’s lives including mine with a message that’s so life-affirming and real it should be required listening… It’s just universal. And one of me most important parts of the song was written improv when its legendary singer was recording it… They needed a verse and he sang what came into his head on the spot and it tied the song together. You have to hear this story and interview coming up with 2 of the 3 co-writers of this song, JD Souther who wrote 3 #1 hits for the Eagles including Best of My Love and Heartache Tonight, and Mike Campbell the former guitarist, producer and co-writer of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. I’m so pumped to share today’s interviews. It's with two legendary songwriters who also have had their own solo careers One is with Mike Campbell who co-wrote, produced, and played guitar in the Heartbreakers… He was Tom Petty’s right-hand man co co-writing such classics as Refugee, Running Down a Dream, and Stop Draggin' My Heart Around. as well as producing their signature sound on so many amazing records. The other is with JD Souther who had his own massive hit with You’re Only Lonely but also co-wrote many of the Eagles' greatest hits from Heartache Tonight to New Kids in Town to Best of My Love. They came together with Eagle Don Henley at the end of the 80s to combine on a song for his 1989 classic solo record The End of the Innocence. The song is the heart-wrenching life lesson The Heart of the Matter. Mike Campbell had worked with Don Henley a few years previously on his top 5 solo smash the Boys of Summer. The song is about a man who hears through the grapevine that his former lover has started a relationship with someone else. Something both Don Henley and JD Souther knew a lot about as it was exactly what was going on with the two of them in their personal lives. They had both broken up with their fiancees… They had both been engaged the years before this song was created and so it came from a real place. Up next two interviews I did with JD and Mike about this song and the process of writing such a vulnerable and personal song. Let’s get into it... As I mentioned at the beginning of this. This is such a personal song for me. One of my favorite songs ever and one that I have shared with those closest to me including my own kids. It’s an important principle... Forgiveness.
