The zone, which houses the US and British embassies and Iraqi leadership, has recently been targeted by rockets and mortars, causing casualties. In other violence on Wednesday, a mortar shell slammed into a house in a residential area of eastern Baghdad, killing at least three civilians and wounding at least three others, police said. "A rocket slammed into the home of my neighbour. My son and nephew were killed as a result of flying shrapnel," the father of one of the victims told AP Television. The bloodshed in the capital, as well as continued violence on Wednesday in Basra that included at least six dead and 18 injured, came a day after nearly 60 people died in a series of bombings in four cities in northern and central Iraq. The bombings struck directly at US claims that the Sunni insurgency was waning and being replaced by Shiite militia violence as a major threat. Still, in an address to the European Parliament in Brussels on Wednesday, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki voiced optimism that his government would soon defeat al-Qaida in Iraq. And hundreds of residents of Nu'maniyah took to the streets chanting slogans in support of al-Maliki and his security crackdown plan in Basra, Sadr City and other areas.
