Have you ever asked what are the Overhead Squat muscles worked and the importance of Overhead Squat muscles for this particular squat variation? This video discusses the questions: What Muscles Do The Overhead Squats Work? What muscles are involved in the Overhead Squat? How can that benefit us and our training? When I hear the question of ‘What muscles do the overheads work’ invariably I have to think about a statement that says ‘train movements, not muscles’. This statement encapsulates best my idea of training, that it is not about training muscle in isolation, but much rather improve the effectiveness and efficiency of movements. In essence this is also the biggest difference between strength training for sport performance and bodybuilding. While both are some form of strength training the ultimate goal is different. Strength training for sport performance aims to use the strength training as a tool to improve sport performance, while bodybuilding uses the strength training as a tool to improve and maximize muscle growth and lead to gains in muscle mass. So there is nothing wrong with the strength training vs bodybuilding discussion, it’s simply different goals. What movements do the Overhead Squats work? The Overhead Squat is an exercise that trains effectively the squatting pattern and will lead to a better squatting technique. This better squatting technique will carry over to a better Back Squat technique and Front Squat technique. What Muscles and Muscle Groups do Overhead Squats work? The Overhead Squat demand a very strong shoulder girdle to carry the weight overhead and a very strong trunk and core to support the squatting movement. Consequently the Overhead Squat is also a good exercise to improve your core stability. The Overhead Squat demands a flexible thoracic spine, hip and lower back and ankle in order to be executed effectively. A word of caution, because you are able to squat more weight with your lower body, than you can carry with your upper body, the Overhead Squat is not the best exercise if you are interested in improving strength and maximize muscle growth and muscle gains. You can do the test yourself, see how much weight you can overhead squat and compare it to how much weight you can back squat and how much weight you can front squat. You will find out you can back squat more than you can front squat and front squat more than you can overhead squat.
