One tradition says that Emperor Constantine the Great, who legalized Christianity in the Roman Empire, had a daughter who contracted leprosy. After she prayed at Agnes’ grave, the young girl was healed, and Constantine ordered the construction of a church over the gravesite. To this day, the faithful beseech Agnes’ intercession in that church. Born into a noble Christian family in Rome, Agnes was beautiful, wealthy, and holy. Though that made her attractive to many young noblemen, Agnes wanted only to love Jesus and dedicated herself to a life of virginity.
