Ninth Sunday after Pentecost July 21, 2024 AS WE GATHER The Berlin Wall, built in 1961, was constructed to keep East German citizens effectively from escaping to West Berlin. It separated both friends and family. Attempting to cross over it possibly meant death. Mercifully it has come down. An even more effective barrier is the sin that separates us from God and from each other. Our own attempts to breach the wall of sin are futile and doomed to failure. In today's reading from Ephesians, Paul assures us that Jesus was sent to breach the wall of sin for us, and to destroy its power to separate us from God. Through Christ, we are reconciled to the Father, through whom we are also joined together with others of His family to be "a holy temple in the Lord." We are, in essence, reconciled to reconcile.
