After being defeated at the end of the Second Age, Sauron was bound for revenge. He wanted nothing more than to cover Middle-earth in total darkness. As Pippin lamented in Return of the King, it wasn't an easy time to be alive. As bad as the Third Age was, the First Age made it seem like a regular holiday. During the First Age, Morgoth (the original Dark Lord) reigned over Middle-earth with all his terrible servants. Besides his legions of Orcs and massive, fire-breathing dragons, Morgoth also had several Balrogs at his disposal. Those Balrogs were fearsome Maiar, but that raises an important question.
