Christmas Eve Service (Luke 2) Sermon by Pastor JD Howell

Christmas Eve Service | Luke 2 | Soul-stirring sermon by Pastor JD Howell Luke 2 draws our hearts back to the familiar yet powerful account of the birth of Jesus Christ. This passage reminds us that the coming of Christ was not a legend or a symbol, but a literal event that took place in real history. Jesus was born in a specific place, at a specific time, exactly as God had promised. What happened in Bethlehem was not accidental or convenient, but divinely orchestrated to fulfill God’s word spoken centuries before. Luke records how a Roman decree, an inconvenient journey, and an overcrowded inn all worked together to accomplish God’s plan. Bethlehem was small, overlooked, and unimpressive by worldly standards, yet it was the very place God chose to send His Son. The humility of the setting points us to a deeper truth: God delights in working through what the world ignores. The One who existed from everlasting chose to enter our world quietly, wrapped in swaddling clothes, laid in a manger, and born in what Scripture calls the “house of bread.” Bethlehem’s name and history preach a message that still speaks to us today. The world is hungry for peace, hope, forgiveness, and meaning, and Christmas reminds us that God knew exactly what we needed. Jesus declared Himself to be the Bread of Life, the only One who can truly satisfy the emptiness of the human heart. Just as an empty plate is the only plate that can be filled, a humble and open heart is the one God delights to fill with His grace. “And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.” (Luke 2:7) “And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.” (Luke 2:1) This Christmas Eve message challenges us to lay aside pride, self-sufficiency, and distraction, and to come to Christ with humility. Are you willing to be an empty plate this Christmas, ready for God to fill you with the true satisfaction found only in Jesus Christ?
