For Spanish people, the “Semana Santa” (Holy Week) is an important time to show their faith and religious devotion. In many places in Southern Spain like Seville and Ronda, you’ll see members of “hermandades” or “confradias” (brotherhoods) leading day and night processions that last for hours. “Costaleros” carry massive and elaborate “pasos” (floats) with antique, life-size, sculptures depicting the Passion of Jesus or the grieving Virgin Mary. There are marching bands, “nazarenos” wearing robes and conical hats called “capirotes”; women dressed in black, and wearing a lace veil called “mantillas”; and “penitentes” walking barefoot while wooden carrying crosses. Children also participate in the processions, giving “caramelos” (sweets) to children in the crowds. You’ll also notice that the locals wear formal clothes when participating in religious rituals. #holyweek #semanasanta #semanasantasevilla #spaintravel #traveltheworld #travelgram #travel #travelling #perpetualponderer #seville #ronda
