The Northeast Entrance to Yellowstone National Park is often called the gateway to the American Serengeti. It is remote and drives right through the Lamar Valley, which is one of the best places in the lower forty-eight states to view wildlife. Visitors to Lamar Valley often see bison, elk, wolves bears and even an occasional moose. The Northeast Entrance is open year-round and is known as the Silver Gate. The Lamar Valley is stunning with vast scenic grassy vistas and the towering peaks of the Absaroka Mountain Range. The Lamar River meanders through the valley, providing a water source for the abundant wildlife. The Lamar Valley is home to the northern herd of bison at Yellowstone National Park. Yellowstone National Park preserves the most important herd of American Bison in the United States, as it is the only place where bison have lived continuously since pre-historic times. Male bison can weigh up to 2,000 pounds and females up to 1,000 pounds. Bison live 12 to 15 years, but some can live as long as 20 years. Bison can be aggressive and run up to thirty miles per hour. Yellowstone National Park was established on March 1, 1872, and is the first national park created in the United States. Its establishment stemmed from the documented accounts of unique geothermal features and diverse wildlife.
