Deconstructing I Feel Fine - The Beatles (Isolated Tracks)
One of The Beatles' most memorable songs, I Feel Fine, was written sometime around September or October of 1964. It was mostly a John composition with some input from Paul, as he stated: "The song itself was more John's than mine. We sat down and co-wrote it with John's original idea." The song was written around a guitar riff, which took some influence from Watch Your Step by Bobby Parker. I Feel Fine was recorded on October 18, 1964, during a marathon session that also saw Eight Days a Week, Kansas City/Hey Hey Hey, and Mr. Moonlight being recorded or finished. One of the most defining moments of I Feel Fine is the feedback. According to Geoff Emerick, "It was just serendipity: during a break, John had leaned his guitar against his amp but had neglected to turn down the volume of the pickup. Just at that moment, for no particular reason, Paul had plucked a low 'A' on his bass, and from across the room, the sound waves set John's guitar feeding back." John became infatuated with the effect, so I Feel Fine begins with feedback before he starts the guitar riff. Take 1 of the song was in a higher key, which caused John to struggle with the vocals. By Take 2, the key was lowered to help. By Take 6, it was decided that John's vocals would be overdubbed. By this point, Ringo had also changed his drumming to what is heard in the final version as heard in the start of take 7 in the video. Take 9 was the winning take, and John, Paul, and George double-tracked their vocals, with George also double-tracking his guitar solo at the same time. This filled all four tracks, completing the song. This video includes some rough isolations of John and George's guitars. Since they were recorded on the same track, it hasn't really been possible in the past to isolate them. However, I managed to get a decent isolation, with some occasional bleed. Enjoy!
