Forms of Literature - Drama Forms (Part - III) In this video we are discussed about drama and drama forms. Drama: A Drama is the portrayal of fictional or non fictional events through the performance of written dialogue (either prose or poetry). Dramas are written to be performed on the stage, on film or the radio. Dramas are typically called plays. Genre of Drama: Tragedy - Tragedy is a genre of story in which a hero is brought down by his / her own flaws, usually by ordinary human flaws such as over ambition greed or an excess of love, loyalty or honor. It is based on human suffering and mainly the terrible or sorrowful events that befall a main character. Comedy - Comedies are amusing and entertaining works of writing that are written for the purpose of evoking positive reactions from the audience. Tragicomedy - It is a literary genre that blends aspects of both tragic and comic forms. It is incorporated with jokes throughout the story just to lighten the tone. Farce - A Farce is a type of comedy that makes use of highly exaggerated and funny situations aimed at entertaining the audience. Melodrama - Melodrama is a work of a theatrical performance that uses exaggerated events and characters. Melodramas typically concentrate on dialogue which is often bombastic or excessively sentimental rather than action. Musical Drama - In Musical Dramas, dramatists not only tell their stories through acting and dialogue, but through dance as well as music. Often the story may involve serious subject though it may also be comedic. Historical Drama - It is a work set in a past time period usually used in the context of television and film. It is also known as period piece, costume drama and period drama. Problem Play - It is a type of drama that developed in the 19th century to deal with controversial social issues in a realistic manner, to stimulate thought, to expose social ills and discussion on the part of the audience. Poetic Drama - It combines both the qualities of poetry and drama that give deep impact of dramatist's emotions on the readers. It increases seriousness in tragedy and actors feel comfortable to learn poetic dialogue. Pantomime - A dramatic representation in which the performers express themselves mutely by gestures, often to the accompaniment of music. Epic Theatre - It is a form of didactic drama presenting a series of loosely connected scenes that avoid illusion and often interrupt the story line to address the audience directly with analysis, arguments or documentation. Theatre of The Absurd - It is a post world war II designation for particular plays of absurdist fiction written by a number of primarily European play wrights in the late 1950's. The Plays focus largely on ideas of existentialism and express what happens when human existence lacks meaning or purpose and communication breaks down.
