The much-despised Gezi Park redevelopment project has sparked Turkey's biggest protests in decades. The police force moved early on Saturday in an attempt to push out dozens of protesters that have joined in a wide expression of anger against the ruling authorities. Overnight, police chased away protesters with tear gas and water cannons after they put up barricades on a street close to the US embassy. In Istanbul, protesters in Gezi Park struck a defiant note early on Saturday, hours after talks between a small delegation of protesters and hundreds of others occupying the park ended. Participants refused to give any details about the meeting. Instead an official declaration is expected to be read out at Saturday afternoon in Gezi Park. The meeting had been requested by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan as a last attempt to persuade protesters to end their two week sit-in. Heavy rainfall forced people out of the square and by early morning hours the roundabout by The Republic Monument was left empty.
