How To Check A Spark Plug With A Multimeter: Test A Spark Plug With A Multimeter. In this video tutorial I will show you how to check a spark plug with a multimeter. Here is how to do it; First, remove the spark plugs from your car. • Switch off your car and pop the hood to locate the spark plugs. You’ll often find them at the top of a 4-cylinder engine, on the side or top of an inline 6-cylinder, and on each side of a V6 and V8 engine. Consult your manual if you can’t locate your car’s spark plugs. • Grab the wire plug close to the bottom and remove it to reveal the spark plug. • Use your socket wrench to remove the spark plug. • Once removed, use a wire brush or compressed air to clean out any debris. Next, calibrate your multimeter. • Set the spark plugs aside and grab your multimeter. • Go ahead and switch it on, then move the dial to the appropriate OHM setting (typically 20K OHMs, but consult your spark plug’s manual to verify the correct range. Some multimeters label this using the Omega symbol. • Touch the two leads to each other to ensure your multimeter works. Finally, test the spark plugs. • Attach the red lead to the terminal (tip) where the wire connects and the black lead to the threaded area of the spark plug. Ensure the black lead touches the copper core. • Check your multimeter to get the readings. Spark plugs with resistors have higher readings than those without. Confirm with your manual to ensure you're getting accurate readings. For resistor-type spark plugs, a typical reading falls between 5K to 20K OHMs. Replace your spark plugs if you get low readings or zero. • Also, touch the black lead with other metallic parts of your spark plugs. You shouldn’t get a reading when you do this. If you do, replace the spark plug.
