Cement companies in focus: CCI investigating anti-competitive behaviour

Competition Commission of India (“CCI”) has initiated an investigation against cement companies in India. As per reports, the CCI probe is regarding alleged anti-competitive behaviour. Cement companies ACC & Ambuja Cements have confirmed the development and say that They have acted and continues to act in compliance with competition laws and are fully cooperating with the investigation and providing all necessary information to the authorities. Analysts say that While similar claims were made in the past, CCI has not been able to prove price collusion in cement space as it is difficult to prove dominant market position in various regions . Irrespective of whether cement companies will be held responsible or will they have to pay penalties, the current move will at least put a stop to further pricing upticks.
