There are two types of speciation which illustrate how the process occurs. Allopatric speciation occurs when there is a physical barrier separating individuals in a population, causing them to be subjected to different selection pressures, driving a shift in allele frequency in their gene pools. Sympatric speciation occurs within the same habitat, where mating preferences and/or disruptive selection occurs.
