Avoid Lateral Epicondylosis with Proper Climbing Technique

Avoid Lateral Epicondylosis with Proper Climbing Technique

This is a video from the Rock Rehab Pyramids to help you reduce the change of a rotator cuff strain while climbing. When grasping climbing holds it is common for the wrist to extend back. This position is used because grip strength is stronger when the wrist is extended back 35 degrees. When the wrist extends back 35 degrees, additional muscles that attach to the back of your fingers (finger extensors) aid in stabilizing your grip. The muscles in the back of the wrist attach to the outside of the elbow. Gripping with an extended wrist increases stress on their attachment to outside of the elbow and can cause pain. To avoid excessive wrist extension, keep a neutral wrist while gripping and allow your elbow to angle in closer to the wall. When hand jamming wide cracks there is a tendency to extend your wrist backward to fill up the space in the crack. Instead of extending your wrist try turning the wrist inside the crack to secure your hand jam. The "Rock Rehab Pyramid" is a system developed to prevent and rehabilitate rock climbing injury. The goal of the four-phase system is to take you from the pain, inflammation and tissue overload stage to gain full mobility, strength and eventually pain-free climbing movement.
