A long, thin catheter containing the agreed upon number of embryos, along with a small amount of fluid, is passed through the cervix into the uterus, where the embryo or embryos are released. Here are some steps in the embryo transfer process: Ovulation induction Egg retrieval Fertilization Fertility doctor determines which embryos have the best chance of implantation Embryo transfer The embryos are usually transferred at the four to eight-cell stage, on the second or third day after egg retrieval. They then need to continue growing for another two or three days to reach the blastocyst stage (100–150 cells), before they're ready for implantation. During the days after the transfer, the blastocyst will begin to hatch out of its shell, attach itself to the uterus, and implant deeper into the uterine lining. Implantation is usually complete by day five. On day six, the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which signals a developing pregnancy, will start to enter the bloodstream.
