The narrative follows John, a soft-spoken sound technician for a New York news station, whose life is shattered when his pregnant wife is murdered by a ruthless gang after witnessing a broad-daylight kidnapping. Finding the NYPD paralyzed by bureaucratic apathy and the city’s escalating depravity, John resurrects an ancient discipline, donning a stark white shinobi shozoku to wage a one-man war against the criminal underworld. The plot spirales into the fantastical as he encounters the "Plutonium Killer," a radiation-scarred mastermind trafficking women for sinister purposes. While John Liu provides a physically magnetic performance defined by his trademark gravity-defying kicks and stoic intensity, the character is given a soul through the 2021 vocal performance of martial arts icon Don "The Dragon" Wilson, whose delivery perfectly captures the earnest, hard-boiled spirit of the era. Originally conceived and filmed in 1984 as Liu’s grand entry into the American exploitation market, the project occupies a singular space in film history—a displaced artifact of the Reagan-era ninja craze that sat in a state of suspended animation for over three decades. Produced on a shoestring budget by the now-defunct 21st Century Distribution Corporation, New York Ninja was abandoned mid-production when the company plummeted into bankruptcy, leaving the raw 35mm footage to rot in unlabelled canisters. It remained a mythic "lost film" until Vinegar Syndrome acquired the negative in 2019. This aesthetic context is vital: because the original audio, scripts, and production notes were entirely lost, the version audiences see today is a "re-directed" reconstruction by Kurtis M. Spieler. Every sound effect, every line of dialogue, and the pulsating synth score by Voyag3r was created from scratch decades after the actors left the set. The production is steeped in cinephile curiosities, most notably its "All-Star" voice cast, which acts as a love letter to 1980s genre cinema. The reconstruction team enlisted a roster of B-movie legends, including Cynthia Rothrock and Leon Isaac Kennedy as detectives, and the inimitable Michael Berryman as the villainous Plutonium Killer. In a feat of incredible dedication, the writers had to employ professional lip-readers to study the silent footage of the original 1984 actors—most of whom remain unidentified to this day—to reverse-engineer what the dialogue might have been, occasionally inventing lines to fill the gaps of Liu’s more eccentric directorial choices.
