Teen Arrested in 17-year-old Girl's Death Has Violent Past

COLUMBUS (Lisa Rantala/Dawn Faugl) -- Prosecutors are requesting to try a teenage suspect as an adult in the murder case of another teen this week. Police say Tayon Dunson, 15, shot and killed Shevona Whitehead, 17, at his home Monday night on S. Champion Avenue. Police say they found two guns and Dunson Tuesday night, and charged him with murder. ABC 6/FOX 28 is also uncovering new information that could have kept Dunson off the streets the day of Whitehead's death. Dunson was one of five boys convicted in two high profile attacks last year that targeted a teenager at the Franklinton branch library, and another teen who was beat up and dragged off of a COTA bus. Surveillance video captured both attacks that put every offender except for Dunson behind bars in prison, or the Department of Youth Services. The judge sentenced Dunson to two years probation since he was 14 years old at the time, and had minimal involvement with the courts. Since then, prosecutors say Dunson has violated the terms of that probation by testing positive for marijuana last year, and skipping at least 16 days of school this year. Prosecutors had requested Dunson be sent to Department of Youth Services after each violation until he's 21 years old, and made their most recent request the day of Whitehead's murder. Sources say Dunson stayed on the streets after Monday's hearing since his attorney requested for more time to see the evidence against his client, causing the case to be continued to next month. Hours later, police were called to Dunson's home regarding a shooting and Whitehead was pronounced dead. Reports indicate Dunson and Whitehead were acquaintances. Investigators say Dunson has admitted to his involvement in the shooting, but would not elaborate how the gun was fired. A witness who spoke exclusively with ABC 6 claimed it was an accident. No relatives of the suspect or victim were at court today. Dunson has another hearing on the murder case set for Thursday.
