(2 Nov 2008) HEADLINE: Aid fears in wake of Congo fighting --------------------------------------- CAPTION: Rebels who have seized large areas of eastern Congo appear to be keeping a self-imposed ceasefire. But for tens of thousands of refugees, the situation remains chaotic. (Nov. 2) ---------------------------------------- [Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] NB. THIS IS A VOICEOVER TRANSCRIPT, NOT A FULL SHOT LIST. Aid organizations say they're worried about a lack of food and shelter for these Congo refugees. Thousands of people have been forced to flee recent fighting between Tutsi-led rebels and government troops. While the fighting appears to be on hold for now - rebel troops are consolidating what they've taken outside the capitol of Goma. The aid agency Doctors without Borders says there's an urgent need for clean water and basic things like blankets and food for the refugees. SOT: Nats :John Ndungo, displaced person: This man says "We have been here with our children, they are suffering because they have nothing to eat, we don't know what to do as even we ourselves are feeling hungry." Dozens of people already have died of cholera or severe diarrhea for lack of clean water. When aid workers have tried to hand out food - there have been reports of near-riot conditions. The recent conflict is fueled by ethnic hatred stemming from Rwanda's 1994 genocide and Congo's unrelenting civil wars. APTN STORY NUMBER: 583957 Near Goma 1. Wide of camp for displaced persons 2.
