Pull back from mid shot of Alemao STORYLINE: Rio de Janeiro police backed by helicopters and armoured vehicles invaded a shantytown complex long held by drug traffickers on Sunday, quickly taking over the key gang stronghold in an historic victory meant to help make the city safe for the 2016 Olympics. Black-clad officers poured into the Alemao shantytown complex just after sunrise amid heavy fire, with helicopters flying low overhead to support the men on the ground. The operation was crucial to the city's campaign to push criminals out of the shantytowns where they have ruled with impunity, an effort to secure Rio before the city hosts World Cup matches in 2014 and the 2016 Olympics. The operation came after gangs unleashed a week of violence in the city, with more than 100 cars and buses set on fire and at least 35 deaths, mostly of suspected traffickers. Police said they captured large amounts of weapons, ammunition and drugs in the complex, which includes a dozen shantytowns that are home to at least 85,000 people. Police and troops moved into the complex inside armoured vehicles as residents watched from their windows in shacks packed along the hills. Hundreds of soldiers in camouflage and elite and regular police had been surrounding the Alemao since Saturday night, sheltering behind the armoured vehicles. At least one trafficker was killed in the raid. Corporal Telles from Rio de Janeiro's 9th military police batallion said the victim, who was not identified by police or medical personnel, was found with an R-15 rifle and several kilograms of cocaine and marijuana. Telles said the victim was killed after he shot at police from a roof in the shantytown.
