Presider: Fr. Brian Walker, O.P. Parish: Dominican Friars Choir: St. Anthony on the Lake TEXT FROM THE GOSPEL & HOMILY A proclamation of the holy gospel according to St. John. Glory to you, o Lord. Jesus went across the Sea of Galilee. A large crowd followed him, because they saw the signs he was performing on the sick. Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples. The Jewish feast of Passover was near. When Jesus raised his eyes and saw that a large crowd was coming to him, he said to Philip, "Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?" He said this to test him, because he himself knew what he was going to do. Philip answered him, "Two hundred days' wages worth of food would not be enough for each of them to have a little." One of his disciples Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter said to him, "There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what are these for so many?" Jesus said "Have the people recline." Now there was a great deal of grass in that place. So the men reclined about five thousand in number. Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were reclining, and also as much of the fish as they wanted. When they had their fill, he said to his disciples, "Gather the fragments left over, so that nothing will be wasted." So they collected them, and filled twelve wicker baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves that had been more than enough for everyone to eat. When the people saw the sign that he had done they said, "This is truly the prophet, the one who is to come into the world." Since Jesus knew that they were going to come and carry him off to make him a king he withdrew again to the mountain alone. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. As I read this gospel today I couldn't help but think about what has been so popular in the news today people have been complaining about the size of fast food meals and how small they are for the money that they spend. Imagine the people being there on the side of that hill and someone screaming out “I'd like mine super-sized please!” We are looking at the fact that we have an oversized population. Present company included. And we wonder who's to blame? We complain about being too big, and so we go to Ozempic and Wegovy and all other kinds of remedies to help us lose. Yet, we also complain when we don't get large enough portions. Isn't it amazing how, when you go to the movies now they entice you with a deal they tell you that if you just spend 50 cents more you can get twice the size of the popcorn that you had. And of course you never finish it. Or if you do it's been way too much. Every day, my sisters and brothers, we pray the Our Father and in it we pray that we will be given our daily bread. It's not supposed to be supersized. But it's so that we can live. So that we can live from day to day without trouble. In the end we can only blame ourselves if we're a little bit too heavy. I realize that for some we can blame it really on a medical reason but that's not everybody. Let us pray and especially remember those who go without that they may truly have their daily bread. Amen.
