Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has declared a state of emergency to curb the spread of COVID-19, after the government's advisory panel gave him the green light to go ahead. The state of emergency takes effect immediately and will last until May 6. It applies to hard-hit cities including Tokyo, Osaka and five other prefectures.
