The prophet Isaiah spoke of a Messianic age that would usher in a great revolution and result in a reversal of fortunes. Those who had been victimized and oppressed, hopeless and helpless would be blessed; while those who selfishly relished their wealth, abused their power and authority, and basked in their achievements and fame, would face the consequences of their evil and misdeeds. Sadly, when the Messiah did come, the very people who yearned for His coming failed to recognize Him! This is why Jesus, in today’s Gospel, asks the blind men if they really believed He could cure them. Ironically, these blind men recognised the Messiah, while those with sight were blind to their Saviour. St Nicholas, whose feast we celebrate today was able to recognise the poverty of those amongst whom he lived. Through his anonymous gift-giving, this warm-hearted Bishop of Myra would cater to those in need, and thus was born the tradition of Santa Claus!
