I QUIT! Why I'll NEVER Go Back to Drug & Alcohol Counseling at Corporate Rehabs Again

Substance abuse treatment and counseling at a mainstream outpatient treatment program are how I got started in the field of addiction. I went to school for addiction counseling and after finishing, became a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor. I did an internship at a substance abuse treatment program that was really a 3-in-1 facility. It was a methadone clinic from 5:30 am to 3 pm and from 3 pm to 5:30 pm it was a Suboxone clinic as well as an outpatient program. This was a corporate treatment program that has a big chain of rehab facilities all over the country. It was a profit and business model-based program and there is nothing wrong with this except they were cutting corners and breaking rules and always putting profits above the clients, patients, and employees. I worked there for several years and in not one single employee meeting (which were weekly) was there a topic of how to help people get sober. The topics were about how to keep people in treatment, how to get more of them to come to their counseling sessions, how to get more people in treatment, etc. To be fair, it was a top-down hierarchy so the people in charge of growing the profit-driven business made the rules that our facility and the others needed to follow. So my fellow colleagues such as counselors, doctors, nurses, and receptionists were not creating this culture... it was the individuals that held much higher positions in the company that wrote and enforced the rules. The reasons I finally quit my career in alcohol and drug counseling was burnout from a caseload that I think was 2.5x higher than the maximum, the profit-driven versus human compassion-driven business model, the low pay, the inflexibility, several other reasons, and my strong intuition that it was finally time to move on and help people with addiction in a creative and compassionate way on my own. Please Note: This is just my experience and I know there are many wonderful addiction treatment programs. I know of some of them and am colleagues with people that work at some of them. My experience was at one big-business chain of rehabs. I'm not knocking all rehabs or even all of the chains of this particular rehab. I'm simply sharing my own personal experience working at one facility. I'm glad I left, though, because now I'm actually helping a lot more people and I'm not stressed out, overworked, and underappreciated like before. 💥 ABOUT MATT FINCH💥 Matt Finch is the Founder of Opiate Addiction Support, a blog that has received more than 2.5 million visitors, a former Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor, a Certified Strategic Intervention Coach, Certified Fit Recovery Coach, Certified Level 2 Qigong Instructor, and a Certified Advanced Food-Based Healing Instructor Specializing in Alcohol & Drug Recovery-Based Nutritional Therapeutics.
