6 November 2022 | 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time | Mons Bernard Kiely

It is the thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time. Mass comes from the parish Church of Good Shepherd; Balmoral and the presider is Monsignor Bernard Kiely. The first reading was written less than two hundred years before the coming of Christ. It is a time when the people of God are experiencing great persecution just for being believers. The reading reminds us that God loves us, and we will receive the eternal life offered to all. Those that Paul was writing to also experienced great trials because of their belief in Christ. Paul reminds us that despite trials the Lord is faithful and gives us strength and comfort. The Sadducees in the Gospel are trying to ridicule Jesus through technicalities. In response Jesus’ answer does not answer their questions directly. Rather, Jesus indicates that the legal definition of marriage that they are working with is not applicable to the resurrected life at all. Jesus is suggesting that there is an altogether different paradigm at play that the Sadducees do not get. Jesus seems to be drawing attention away from our own deliberations, hang-ups and, and distractions about what happens when we die toward the only thing that can help us make sense of it; that is God. Jesus is emphatically pointing out that, ‘God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.’ And this living God loves us.
