Celebrating Chinese New Year in the Mississippi Delta across the years

Celebrating Chinese New Year in the Mississippi Delta across the years

Join this special event to learn about Mississippi Delta Chinese and how they celebrated Chinese New Year. In this program, Sally and Gilroy Chow will talk about the many traditions and customs to properly begin the New Year as shared by our predecessors. They will talk about the Chinese calendar, the significance of wearing something red, and other customs brought with them from China. Through their love of cooking and the creativity due to the lack of Chinese ingredients in the area, Sally and Gilroy have built a reputation for Chinese Southern cooking. The Chows were featured on the Travel Channel's Bizarre Foods show with host Andrew Zimmern. They have been written up in the NY Times, Southern Living, and other publications. They have attended the Smithsonian Folk Life Festival and have a spot in the Museum of Chinese in America's exhibit "Stories of Chinese Food and Identity in America".
