Gospel of the day & commentary • Tuesday, September 16: A woman's misery

Commentary on Today's Gospel Luke 7:11-17 At that time, Jesus went to a town called Nain. His disciples and a large crowd were traveling with him. He came to the gate of the town as a dead man was being carried out for burial; the man was his only son, and his mother was a widow. A large crowd from the town was accompanying the woman. When the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said, "Do not weep." He approached and touched the coffin. The bearers stood still, and Jesus said, "Young man, I command you, get up." Then the dead man sat up and began to speak. And Jesus gave him back to his mother. Awe fell upon them all, and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us, and God has visited his people." » And this word about Jesus spread throughout Judea and the entire region.
