Strengthened with all strength, according to the might of his glory, to steadfastness and Patient in everything, give thanks with joy to the Father, who has made you fit to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. It is he who has delivered us from the power of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, through whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Gospel of the Day From the Gospel according to Luke Luke 5:1-11 At that time, while the crowd was pressing in on Jesus, listening to the word of God, he was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret. He saw two boats there alongside the lake, the fishermen having disembarked and were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from the land. He sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch." Simon answered, "Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing; But at your word I will let down the nets." They did so and caught such a large number of fish that their nets were about to break. So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. They came and filled both boats so full that they were about to sink. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus' knees and said, "Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man." For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish they had made; and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men." And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him. The Words of the Popes The crowd presses around Jesus, while some disappointed fishermen, including Simon Peter, wash their nets after a night's fishing gone wrong. And behold, Jesus climbs into Simon's boat; Then he invites him to put out into the deep and cast his nets again (cf. Luke 5:1-4). […] It wasn't a good time for fishing; it was broad daylight, but Peter trusts Jesus. He doesn't rely on the fishermen's strategies, which he knew well, but on the newness of Jesus. That wonder that moved him to do what Jesus told him. It's the same for us: if we welcome the Lord on our boat, we can put out into the deep. With Jesus, we navigate the sea of life without fear, without giving in to disappointment when we don't catch anything, and without giving up on the idea that "there's nothing left to do." Always, in our personal lives as in the lives of the Church and society, there is something beautiful and courageous that can be done, always. We can always start over; the Lord always invites us to get back into the game because He opens up new possibilities. So let us accept the invitation: let us banish pessimism and mistrust and put out into the deep with Jesus! Even our little empty boat will witness a miraculous catch.
