It was filmed in Ultra Panavision 70 (a wide-screen format) to maximize the epic scale. George Stevens aimed for a film of deep reverence and spiritual dignity, consciously avoiding the sensationalism and over-the-top melodrama often associated with earlier entries in the genre. Stevens also famously decided to shoot in the American West (specifically Monument Valley, Utah, and Arizona) instead of the Middle East, feeling the historical sites were too eroded and changed.
