In the Gospel Today, Jesus asks two questions – ‘Who do the crowds say that I am?’ and ‘who do you say that I am?’ What is the difference between these two questions? The first question can be answered by anyone. The only effort required is to find out and investigate the answer. A sort of research would be enough to answer that question. The second question can be answered only by a believer. A believer has to be personally involved even to the inmost part of his or her being, then only he or she can give an honest answer. Today, we need to ask ourselves – how do we answer this question, ‘Who do you say that I am?’ Is our answer based on our learning – learning about our faith, and religion which perhaps is taught to us by our elders and teachers? If it is so, we are answering only the first question. In the life of faith, we need to move from the first to the second question, and then only we can have our own say. In other words, we should be able to answer from our own experiences. Our answer has to emerge from our own personal encounters with Jesus. If we do not have our personal experience of Jesus in our life, we cannot express our faith honestly and we also cannot be firm and strong in what we profess. Therefore, let us reflect today – am I still answering the first question? Or have I fully reached to answer the second one? If not, how much effort should I make to know God personally?
