Sermon for Advent 4 (Luke 1:39-56) | December 22, 2024
Mary takes center stage in the first two chapters of Luke’s Gospel and, looking at the Visitation and Mary’s Magnificat, we explore how Luke sees in her, this daughter of Zion, a great gathering of Old Testament figures — Deborah, Jael, Sarah, Eve, and Hannah, even Israel and Jerusalem, and perhaps most powerfully, the Ark of the Covenant — and how all of it ultimately “magnifies the Lord.”
