In the Duolingo English Test "Speak About the Photo" task, it's essential to go beyond basic descriptions and demonstrate a deep understanding of the photo. To help you do this, I’ll cover seven key areas you can talk about in detail to impress the examiners: People or Characters – Use descriptive terms to capture each person’s appearance, actions, and roles. Move beyond “man” or “woman” and think of unique ways to identify their features, attire, and even expressions. Location or Setting – Describe the environment and background of the photo, including setting details, potential context, and even hypothetical locations, like “an old village square” or “a bustling train station.” Objects – Name and describe specific objects in the photo. Instead of saying “a table,” could it be “a rustic wooden dining table”? Adding detail here helps paint a clearer picture for the listener. Actions – What are people or characters doing in the photo? Use precise verbs and descriptive phrases to capture the action, moving beyond basic descriptions like “walking” or “sitting” to create a more dynamic answer. Colour – Colour can reveal a lot about the photo’s context, mood, and setting. Include colour in your descriptions and use it to enhance your portrayal of the scene, for example, by describing a “vibrant red dress” or “faded green leaves.” Mood or Atmosphere – This is your chance to convey the feel or emotion of the scene. Descriptive terms like “serene,” “chaotic,” or “melancholic” can add depth to your response and show that you’re considering the atmosphere of the photo. If You Make a Mistake – In the exam, small mistakes can happen. I’ll also provide quick tips on how to stay calm and correct yourself effectively if you stumble or forget a word. Mastering these areas will help you build rich, detailed answers that boost your DET score and make your responses memorable.
